RS Motorbike Paint Colours

Identifying your original bike paint colour

We know that the majority of motorcycles are not coded, so our database does not rely on you providing a paint code. All you need to do is tell us the year, model and manufacturer of your bike and we'll do the rest. Our extensive motorcycle paint database allows us to match the colours of most makes, including classic motorcycles. It can be useful if you make a note of the other colours on your bike as well as the one you want, as that can help us identify the colour scheme and thus the colour you need. If you want to look for a paint code they are usually under your seat, but don't worry if you can't find one. We can also match rare colours and bikes that have been repainted or customised if you are able to provide us with a paint sample. This can be either a panel or just a small flake of paint.

We have over 30,000 colours listed for some 120 bike and scooter manufacturers. If your particular manufacturer is not listed below, just give us a ring to see if we can help.

Types of Motorbike Paint

Most modern paint finishes are water based, but we do have limited stocks of cellulose, basecoat and 2 pack paints still available. When you place your order we will explain the type of paint that your colour comes in and ensure that detailed application instructions accompany your order. All our paints can safely be used by individuals as well as professionals. We are happy to talk you through the chemical composition of your paint and provide hints and tips to ensure you achieve the best possible result.

Many motorbike colours, in particular candy metallics and pearls require 3 stages. Candies for example are typified by a coloured transparent lacquer (the candy) being applied over a silver base. The colour is then finished off with a clear lacquer. Without the silver base, the colour will be a see through, non metallic, ink like finish. With pearls, the metallic finish is often achieved the other way round. The heart of the colour is achieved with the base layer. The pearl is then a semi transparent iridescent layer that sits on top of the base. Again, a clear lacquer is required as the final layer. It is very important therefore that the correct base is used under the correct colour, otherwise we cannot guarantee the colour match. When we identify your colour, we will be able to tell you if your colour needs a base.

Above all, don't worry! Bikes have been painted with these sorts of techniques since the 50's and with our help and guidance you will be able to reproduce them with great success.
